It’s been two years since I wrote a blog post. Sheesh. Well, that’s embarrassing! What has happened during this time?!? Well, in a nutshell, after I got married in the summer of 2019, I got pregnant, had a baby, and then Covid-19 and lockdowns hit. It’s been a journey! And no – I have not at all lost or forgotten my love of museums. In fact, over the last two years, I have been seriously dreaming of going on trips again and discovering new museums in the Netherlands (and hopefully beyond!). Albeit this time with a very small, sweet little person alongside me 😉 So here’s to making up for two solid years of no blogging! And here’s to blogging not exclusively about museums but about museums with toddlers. PS. I can’t promise regular posts but I’m trying.
After things started to open up again in the Netherlands, I thought I’d begin to take my toddler on outings each weekend. And naturally, one would not think of museums as places for toddlers or very small kids. But the Kinderboekenmuseum or Children’s Book Museum in The Hague set out to prove me wrong! This museum is a complete must for toddlers (and even babies who are only crawling). I was totally amazed by the section dedicated to very small kids. There is a lot to keep them busy here, trust me. And my little one was completely in awe (and slept like a dream thereafter!). “Darling, can we please go here every day??” So all I can say is if you have kids – please visit this place!
So what’s in it for toddlers? Well, there are several interleading rooms in the ‘peuter’ or toddler area (on the very top floor of the museum). There are firetrucks, interactive books, blocks, BIG letters of the alphabet, fishing boats, play kitchens, small houses, puppets, dress-up clothing, and more.
The ‘I am Frog’ exhibition can also be found on the top floor of the museum and is super cute (and also translated into English – see some images below). This exhibition also has a lot of soft floors ideal for those crawling or learning to walk.
And as far as the general ‘peuter’ rooms are considered – they are amazing! My ‘peuter’, toddler, just couldn’t get enough and even wanted to crawl through the small interleading ‘holes’ in each room (which was tricky since I couldn’t get him out and had to drag him out by his feet – some of the rooms are not made for adults). Entertaining, to say the least.
Het Kinderboekenmuseum is a museum we will definitely return to a number of times – it’s a museum that can grow with your kids and they can still get a lot of enjoyment out of being here later on too (I can honestly also recommend this place to parents and adults in general too…I’d come here alone if I could. And if I was small enough I’d also crawl from room to room. It’s definitely shown me how to be a (big) kid again).
