Rituals & Revelry Exhibition at the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth

As I child I loved puppets. Their little faces fascinated me and I even built my own wooden puppet as part of a primary school project. It is for this reason that I was particularly excited to learn of the Rituals & Revelry Exhibition about puppets and masks currently on at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth, the UK.

There is a sense of fantasy that accompanies the creation, use and display of masks and puppets. We tend to think that both are mainly for children but we’re wrong – adults can easily find enjoyment in them too. In fact, many of us find puppets particularly intriguing. There’s a sense of playfulness, creativity and youth associated with them.

The Rituals & Revelry Exhibition at the Russell-Cotes Museum comprises puppets and masks used in film, TV and the media. The exhibition was created by the Scottish Mask & Puppet Centre and has been touring various major museums and galleries in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In fact, it was voted the “best touring exhibition” in the Portsmouth News in 2008.
