200 Years of Dutch Comics at Museum Meermanno, The Hague

200 Years of Dutch Comics and Cartoons is a new exhibition within the doors of Museum Meermanno. This exhibition is definitely worth a visit and is great for adults and children alike. The chronology of comics in the Netherlands is illustrated, from one of the oldest in the Netherlands (dating back to 1493) to contemporary comics and the modern day graphic novel.

Expect vibrant, exciting displays, interactive exhibits as well as an unusual outdoor comic strip exhibition with comics displayed within big orange house-shaped structures (now you can be outdoors, protected from the rain and still enjoy your favourite comic strips!). You’ll also learn about the techniques and art of drawing comic strips from the mouths of Dutch comic book creators themselves.

About Museum Meermanno

Museum Meermanno or the House of the Book is the oldest book museum in the world founded in 1862 and situated within the home of Baron van Westreenen van Tiellandt (1783-1848). The museum can be found at number 30 Prinsessegracht in The Hague – an exquisite location not far from the exclusive shopping district of the city.

Museum Meermanno has plenty to offer visitors – everything from ancient manuscripts and incunabula to Egyptian artifacts and rare travel souvenirs. The main aim of Museum Meermanno is to highlight the beauty of the book form and upon entering its doors, the care, time and dedication paid to each and every exhibit is no doubt evident. For those interested in the history of the book and the printing press, you’ll be sure to learn a lot. In fact, there is a fantastic interactive exhibit where you can learn about the development of the book form from industrialization onwards and explore the future of the book. The museum also houses a magnificent miniature library once belonging to Guus Thurkow (1842-2011) containing 1515 tiny books – a real highlight of Museum Meermanno!

Visit Museum Meermanno from Tuesday to Sunday (11:00-17:00). The entrance fee is 8 Euro for adults over 19 years of age, free for children under 12 years old and free if you possess the Museum Card (2 Euro extra for viewing the comic book exhibition).
